HRT for Women

Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT for short, is used to treat the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause in many women across the globe.

The menopause is a neuro-endocrinological process that impacts multiple organ systems including the brain. During the perimenopause and menopause, the body can suffer from an imbalance, and ultimately a deficiency, of hormones, including oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. It is the dysregulation and deficiency of these hormones that leads to the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause.

The aim of HRT for women is not only to replace lost oestrogen, but to restore the equilibrium of all female hormones in the body, alleviating symptoms and restoring optimum health.

Here at BioID Health, we provide innovative, doctor-led HRT for women that uses bioidentical hormones. These are uniquely designed to replicate your body’s natural hormones, achieving remarkable and life-changing results.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

As hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decrease during menopause, women may experience a wide range of symptoms, which can be both physical and emotional. Here are some of the common symptoms of menopause:

Hot flashes: These sudden sensations of warmth and flushing can be mild or severe and can last from a few seconds to several minutes. They are often accompanied by sweating and a rapid heartbeat.

Night sweats: Similar to hot flashes, night sweats are episodes of intense sweating during the night that can disrupt sleep and lead to fatigue and irritability.
Irregular periods: As hormone levels fluctuate during menopause, periods may become irregular, with longer or shorter cycles, heavier or lighter bleeding, or sometimes skipped periods.

Vaginal dryness and discomfort: The decline in oestrogen levels during menopause can cause vaginal dryness, itching, and burning. This can cause sex to be painful or uncomfortable.

Mood changes: Fluctuations in hormones can affect mood, leading to irritability, anxiety, and depression.

Sleep disturbances: Many women experience difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during menopause, leading to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

Cognitive changes: Menopause can also affect cognitive function, with some women reporting problems with memory, concentration, and thinking clearly.

Loss of libido: As hormone levels decline, some women experience a decreased sex drive or difficulty becoming aroused.

Urinary problems: Some women experience urinary incontinence or frequent urination during menopause.

It’s important to note that not all women will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity and duration of symptoms can vary widely. However, if your symptoms of menopause or perimenopause are severe, then you’ll know that they can seriously impact your quality of life.

Treatment options for menopause

There are several treatment options available to manage the symptoms of menopause. These include:
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): As the most effective treatment for menopause symptoms, HRT involves taking hormones, such as oestrogen and progesterone, to replace the ones that the body is no longer producing. There are two types of HRT, and we will discuss the difference between these below.

Non-hormonal medications: These medications, such as antidepressants and blood pressure medications, can help manage hot flashes and other symptoms. However, they may not be as effective as HRT and can have side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth.

Alternative therapies: These can include herbal supplements, acupuncture, yoga, and other mind-body techniques. Some women find these therapies helpful in managing their symptoms, but evidence for their effectiveness is mixed.

Lifestyle changes: Certain lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms of menopause. These may include regular exercise, a healthy diet, stress management, and getting enough sleep.

Vaginal lubricants and moisturisers: These products can help alleviate vaginal dryness and discomfort.

Gabapentin: This medication is typically used to treat seizures, but has also been shown to be effective in reducing hot flashes.

Clonidine: This medication is normally used to treat high blood pressure but can also be helpful in reducing hot flashes.

How can HRT for women help with menopause symptoms?

By restoring the balance of female hormones, HRT can help to improve, and sometimes even completely eradicate, the symptoms of menopause and peri-menopause.

One of the most common symptoms that our patients come to us with is brain fog, with both perimenopausal and menopausal women often reporting that their brain feels like cotton wool. Bioidentical HRT can improve brain fog, helping you to focus and think more clearly.

It can also reduce your risk of multiple diseases, including cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, which are far more prevalent in women who have gone through the menopause.

There is even evidence that HRT for women can help to improve collagen production in the body.  This can improve the overall hydration levels and elasticity of your skin and, in turn, slow down the aging process and the production of wrinkles

What is the difference between standard HRT and BioID HRT?

Many women who are experiencing menopausal or peri-menopausal symptoms will seek advice from their GP in the first instance.

Often, standard HRT will be prescribed, without any blood tests being performed to identify specific deficiencies. This traditional HRT is also usually supplied as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ dose of synthetic hormones. These are not naturally found in your body, and are not adjusted to your individual needs. Therefore, traditional HRT can lead to unpleasant side effects. These include:

Bloating
Headaches
Breast swelling and tenderness
Vaginal bleeding
Nausea

GPs prescribe standard HRT to bring your hormones to a level that is within a ‘normal range’. This range is based upon the hormone levels in the general population, including individuals from 18 all the way through to 90 years of age.

BioID will restore your hormones to a level that is normal for you – optimising your hormones to what they were in your 20s and 30s, at the peak of your health and vitality. As the levels of hormones that you are prescribed will be scientifically tailored to the exact needs of your body, side effects will be much less likely.

Another major difference between bioidentical HRT and standard HRT is the substances that are used to manufacture them. Standard HRT is usually made of chemicals that are unnatural in the body, including some animal sources and a range of synthetic hormones. One form of HRT is manufactured using the urine of pregnant horses.  As these substances are foreign to your body, they can cause a range of side effects (listed above).

On the other hand, our bioidentical HRT is created from manmade hormones that are derived from the Mexican yam plant. These hormones are then altered to form hormones that are chemically identical to the ones your body naturally produces. This is the second reason why bioidentical HRT produces minimal side effects – it mimics the natural hormones in your body.

How does BioID HRT for women work?

Here at BioID Health, our expert clinicians provide bioidentical HRT for women that offers incredible results.
When you contact us, we’ll firstly conduct a thorough assessment of your hormone levels by performing a comprehensive blood test. This will ascertain whether you are suffering from any specific hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies.
Once we have your blood test results, you will be provided with a tailored treatment plan. This will be designed to optimise your hormone levels, with the aim of eliminating your menopause or peri-menopause symptoms and restoring optimal health.
To ensure your long term health and wellbeing, we’ll also arrange a follow-up blood test after two months of treatment, to give us an indication as to whether your prescription is reducing your symptoms effectively.  If necessary, we can then adjust your medication accordingly.
One of the factors that sets BioID Health apart from our competitors is that once you’ve paid for your initial hormone blood test, you won’t be charged for further blood tests or follow up appointments. The follow up blood test is included in the treatment plan, and our patients are entitled to a monthly follow up with a clinician if they feel this would be beneficial.

Our BioID HRT for women is supplied in three forms – gels, lozenges, or capsules – so you can choose the option that suits you and your lifestyle best.

What do our patients say?

Julie Green commented: “I suffered from menopause symptoms for a few years, including irritability, hot flushes, joint pain, and memory loss, to mention a few. I didn’t want to use HRT because I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution.
Dr. Kinsella saw me for a consultation, and following a simple blood test, he was able to figure out what I was missing. For the past three months, I’ve been taking a combination of oestrogen gel, progesterone, and vitamin D tablets, and I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my overall happiness and well-being; even my hot flushes are less frequent.
Dr. Kinsella and his colleagues are still on hand, keeping a careful eye on me and conducting regular blood tests to check my levels. I’m back to my old self, and I owe it to the team to thank them.”
