A fatigue and hormone assessment, including a DHEA blood test reviewed by a registered clinician, can help find out what’s actually going on. In the UK, DHEA is a prescription-only medicine, so it can’t be sold as a supplement.
Constantly tired. Struggling to switch off. Brain fog that doesn’t seem to lift, even after a decent night’s sleep.
These are some of the symptoms people are talking about when they use the term “adrenal fatigue”.
Adrenal fatigue isn’t a recognised medical diagnosis. And symptoms like these can have many different causes. That’s exactly why we don’t think you should guess.
At BioID Health, we start with your symptoms, medical history and appropriate blood testing. If your results show something that needs further investigation or treatment, one of our doctors or nurse prescribers will talk you through the options.
What do people mean by adrenal fatigue?
The problem is that those symptoms don’t point to one single condition.
Hormones may be one part of the picture. DHEA and cortisol are both produced by the adrenal glands, but symptoms alone can’t tell you whether your levels are outside the expected range.
So we test first.
It gives our clinical team something far more useful to work with than a list of symptoms and a label you may have found online.
Why do we test DHEA?
DHEA levels also change throughout life and generally decline with age.
If there’s a clinical reason to investigate your DHEA level, blood testing can help your clinician understand what’s happening alongside your symptoms, medical history and other relevant hormone results.
It’s one piece of the picture. Not a diagnosis on its own.

Thinking about taking DHEA?
In the UK, DHEA is a prescription-only medicine, not a supplement. Any decision about it needs a clinical reason, starting with testing and a proper medical assessment.
If your results show something that needs further investigation or treatment, your clinician will explain the next steps, including the benefits, limitations and risks of any option.
Your testing and next steps
One of our doctors or nurse prescribers reviews your results in context. That matters because a number on a blood test doesn’t tell the whole story.
If further investigation or treatment is appropriate, your doctor or nurse prescriber will explain what happens next.
And if treatment is prescribed, follow-up testing and clinical reviews allow us to monitor your response and make changes where needed.
No guessing. No buying hormones online and hoping for the best.
Just proper testing, medical oversight and a plan based on your results.
Fatigue and DHEA FAQs
Is DHEA legal in the UK?
Yes, when it is prescribed. In the UK, DHEA is a prescription-only medicine. It is legal for a licensed prescriber to prescribe it, and it should be supplied by a registered pharmacy. It is also a controlled drug, which is why it can’t be bought over the counter as a supplement here.
If DHEA treatment is being considered, the sensible route is through an appropriately qualified clinician who can assess whether it’s suitable for you.
At BioID Health, we don’t offer DHEA as an off-the-shelf supplement. Any treatment decision follows appropriate testing and a clinician-led assessment.
Why is DHEA banned in the UK?
Calling DHEA “banned” is misleading.
DHEA isn’t banned. In the UK it is a prescription-only medicine, so it can’t be sold as an over-the-counter supplement in the way it is in some other countries, such as the US.
That doesn’t mean buying a product online is the right alternative. If you’re concerned about your DHEA levels or symptoms, start with a proper medical assessment.
What is adrenal fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe symptoms such as persistent tiredness, poor sleep, brain fog and difficulty coping with stress.
It isn’t a recognised medical diagnosis, and those symptoms can have many possible causes.
That’s why we don’t diagnose “adrenal fatigue” from symptoms alone. We look at your medical history, symptoms and appropriate test results to understand what may actually be going on.
Can a blood test check my DHEA levels?
Yes. DHEA and DHEA-S can be measured through blood testing.
Your clinician may assess the result alongside other relevant tests, your symptoms and your medical history rather than looking at the number in isolation.
At BioID Health, testing is there to answer a clinical question. Not to sell you a hormone.
